Village of Ponderosa

Redevelopment of the 65-acre former site of the Ponderosa Golf Course into an urban mixed-use village.

West Des Moines, IA | 2009

Dennis Reynolds was project manager and site designer while Design Director with LADCO Development. He continues to provide planning and design services as part of the Village’s Design Review Board.

The initial planning and design process included consensus building workshops with multiple stakeholders, conceptual freehand sketches and detailed planning and design drawings and development guidelines to establish with the City of West Des Moines a desired vision and implementation process. Dennis provided direction and coordinated multiple design and engineering consultants, construction documentation and implementation.

The Village of Ponderosa continues to evolve including award winning planning (American Planning Association), heavily used public parks, integrated water features, three miles of walkways, extensive infrastructure, public art, environmental graphics and multiple established and emerging neighborhoods.

Shimmer and Lakeside Terrace within the Village of Ponderosa won the highest award in 2012 from the Iowa Chapter of ASLA. This eco-friendly water feature designed by Dennis Reynolds, recirculates water from the adjacent pond through a series of weirs and waterfalls before it returns to the lake, providing a display of a dramatic riparian environment while enhancing the quality of the lake water. This cost effective project includes a tower with an integrated clock and theatre inspired gobo light, infrastructure for special events and flexible options for seating.
