Bayeux Sycamore 1794

Bayeux Sycamore 1794

Oil and ink on Birch Plywood, 28” x 40”

Bayeux, France is a beautiful, village with historic architecture that was saved from destruction because the Mayor bravely ran towards the Allied solders as they landed on the Normandy beaches and told them to not bomb the town because all of the German soldiers had fled.   This Sycamore was planted in 1794.  It is located in the courtyard of an abbey near the center of town.

I wanted to capture the unique architectural perspectives of the collection of buildings contrasted with the organic structure of the tree including its shadow that is cast on one of the buildings.
